SUBURBAN
DEATH MARCH
HE / HIM | USA
Suburban Death March is the solo recording project of Jason Buckley.
Heโs been playing music since being a teen in the late 80s, primarily as a bassist. After a break for a few years, he was ready to get back out there and join another band at the start of 2020, and we all know what happened that yearโฆ
So he decided to become his own band, learning how to use a DAW and dubbing whatever space he could stick his laptop in as the Hangry Chateau Studio.
There he began work on what was initially going to be a doom metal concept album about the banality of suburban evil and some specifically banal evil folks in his own suburb in the East San Francisco Bay. That wound up becoming the Hangry Chateau EP, and while doomy, it was also quite proggy, and experimental. The pandemic proved to be a fertile time for crafting these solo works, and many genres were explored, though mostly heavy and always weird. The sound is often inspired by gear. A cheap used electric 12 string here, a toy synth or pocket calculator sized drum machine there, stacked delays, ambient reverbs, expression pedals, every flavor of dirt and gain imaginable all contribute to the sonic textures that make up this music.
Thematic inspiration mostly comes from the frustrations with the current generally awful state of things and the resulting issues with mental health. And while he enjoys making music, the promotional end of things is the most frustrating.
Also frustrating was looking for a label. So when he came upon the Aural Alliance label via a viral Blue Sky post of an artist taking exception to a question on their submission form about punching nazis (it is ALWAYS right, we fought an entire world war about it.), he knew this label would align well with his politics, despite only being furry-adjacent with the only fursuit being a natural one due to being mostly Sicilian and probably part Sasquatch.
